A piano, a dentist's office, the pathos that literally falls on us like raindrops. Theatrical music, full of inspiration and still meaningful, that of Manicburg, which takes up a design of staggering grandeur without losing sight of the qualitative core of certain epic pop-rock. A journey accompanied by a touching video clip starring an eye and a mouth.
They know how to be intense and lyrical, Ray Lustig and Luigi Porto, and in a single song they manage to make us enter a fantastic world where waiting, agitation and fear literally transform into captivating notes, buzzing role changes and puns, exciting and suspended lyrical breaks and much more.
One for You and One for Me is music that amplifies emotions and sensations, anxiety-inducing music that leaves us no escape, music as an ingredient of a larger project, which from the beginning appears figurative, imaginative and total.
Totally enraptured by this first step, we hold tight to the consequences of our actions, our listening and our visions. But above all we hold tight to the Manicburgs, waiting to test their morbid and circulatory intensity over the long distance.
* Closing things out this week is something wonderfully bizarre from the bi-continental duo MANICBURG.
MANICBURG consists of NYC native Ray Lustig, a composer/performer who teaches at The Juilliard School, and Italy’s Luigi Porto, who’s known in his country’s underground, and experimental scenes. Combined they’re creating music that’s bold, theatrical, and creatively bonkers.
Their upcoming self-titled album with be out on October 25th via Respirano Records, and they have a video for the song “Silken Pavilion.”
I’m not sure I have enough words to properly prepare you for what you’re going to see, and hear when you click play, but imagine if The Doors had originally met, and practiced at Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s mansion from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and you’ll kind of have an idea of MANICBURG’s “Silken Pavilion.”
How could you not want to click play after reading that description?
"While the band’s stage performances hearken to antique and dramatic public rites, their forthcoming self-titled debut spans a vast sonic palette at times reminiscent of modern post-punk, dreampop and art-rock artists like Blonde Redhead, Bauhaus and Radiohead. The duo’s intricately crafted songs are testament to Lustig and Porto’s vast training and experience in the field." -The Spill Magazine
"Adorable, underground art rock from the court of the crimson spider: post-punk film composer collides with Julliard professor channelling Ron Mael and MC Kit Kat Club. Taken from forthcoming self-titled LP via Respirano Records. Irresistible." -Echoes and Dust
"With its striking keys hitting right out of the gate, the song finds the band imbuing a sense of drama as they lean into a sound that marries indie rock and prog. The song twists and turns in a way that pulls you into its mysterious nature while maintaining a melodic sensibility. It’s also brimming with intense guitar flourishes, which complement the gloriously weird video." -Glide
